THE GIFT OF UNDERSTANDING…by Phyllis Hobe
SOMETIMES, when we love someone, we feel we just can’t give them enough.  We may even do without things we need ourselves.  I think most parents feel that way about their children.  Love makes us generous.
But generosity is more than giving. If anyone could have showered gifts on those he loved, it was Jesus Christ.  But he didn’t.  He provided for their basic needs; he saw to it that they had shelter and enough to eat.  He watched them counting coins when he could have filled their laps with riches.
Jesus gave something more precious and more lasting than gifts.  He gave understanding.   He knew how hard it is to live in this world. He felt what others felt and couldn’t put into words.   And out of his understanding he gave what people truly need, such as forgiveness for Zacchaesus’s guilt, hope for the cynical woman at the well, recovery for a dying child.
The next time you want to give a gift to someone you love, don’t worry about how much you can afford to spend or how big the present ought to be.  Consider, instead, what generosity really means:  understanding.   That’s something each of us can afford to give – all the time.

NEW CHURCH ELECTRONIC PHOTO DIRECTORY
If you’ve ever had a print photo-directory, you know it is impossible to keep it up-to-date.  New members are added ... people move ... pastors and church staff sometimes change ... kids grow up ... people pass away and before long, your beautiful photo-directory no longer accurately represents the congregation.  We have decided to do our own electronic pictorial directory. A key benefit of an electronic directory is that it can easily be updated on an as-needed basis, which is particularly important to young families who are changing. New members of the church can be added to the directory immediately and no longer need to wait to be included with the rest of the congregation.

Every household that participates will receive a free CD version of the pictorial directory.   The CD provides the use of the image in anyway, anytime, anywhere you wish.   The directory on CD meets the needs of today’s computer-oriented generation and provides a great value to members of the church by being able to print full color pictorial directories on your own printer.
Please participate!  All we ask is that you complete the “Family Directory Authorization Form” in this newsletter and return it to the office as well as submit a recent photo in one of the ways indicated below.
We Want to See Your Face in Our New Pictorial Directory! It's important that your photo is in our directory so people can match names and faces.  You may drop off a recent (less than 3 years old) photo or email it to the church at fumchurch@iowatelecom.net.     We are asking for head shots of couples, individuals, and families (which include children high school graduate age and younger).   If your child is a post high school graduate they are welcome to submit their own picture to be listed in the directory.   Photography also will occur in September.   Look for dates and times in the September Newsletter as well as upcoming bulletins.

“KNOXVILLE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH”
 Family Directory Authorization Form

First United Methodist Church is developing a directory of families (parents and their children).  It’s a great resource for keeping in touch and acquainting new persons with the existing members of First United Methodist Church.  Please complete this form and return it to the church office as soon as possible.
