MARCH 2012 NEWSLETTER

I don’t know how many of you are aware that when I was out of the pulpit and Rev. Kevin Glesener preached for me February 11, I was at a continuing education event sponsored by the Upper Room. I am a part of the 2 Year Academy for Spiritual Formation #33, held at Linwood Retreat Center, Donaldson Indiana. The Academy for Spiritual Formation was developed by Upper Room Ministries in 1983 after more than five years of research, study and prayer. Academy #33 consists of approximately 50 persons from all over the country and one person in my covenant group is from South Korea. We will be meeting once a quarter for 5 day the next 2 years. This is something I have want to do for a long time and I appreciate the support of the SPRC and the whole church as I get this opportunity to grow spiritually. I will be sharing more throughout the 2 year experience, but for now in this time of Lent, where we challenge ourselves to spend time engaged in spiritual discipline; I want to share with you an article from Spiritual Formation Bible published by Zondervan with the help of the Upper Room. Use their teachings and suggestions this Lent and beyond to grow in your relationship with God.

Formational Scripture Reading:

Make listening for God's voice a top priority. Focus your attention on what God is saying to you as you read. Listen for God to speak to you in and through, around and within, over and behind the words. Keep asking yourself, "What is God seeking to say to me in all of this?" Allow the text to become an instrument of God's control in your life. Respond to what you read with your heart and spirit.

Let your response take place down in the deeper levels of your being. Ask yourself questions such as: How do I feel about what is being said? How am I reacting? How am I responding down deep within myself? What is going on inside of me? Then begin to ask yourself "why" questions: Why do I feel this way? Why am I respond­ing in this manner? Why do I have these feelings within?

Let this exercise be an opportunity to get in touch with the deeper layers of your being. What do your reactions tell you about your habits, your attitudes, your per­spectives, your responses and your reactions to life? Are you beginning to see something about yourself? Thomas a Kempis said, "A humble knowledge of our­selves is a surer way to God than is the search for depth of learning." That humble knowledge of yourself can come when you read Scripture if you balance your cogni­tive response pattern with this affective response from deep within your being.

Prepare to read by quieting yourself. You can't run in, sit down, pick up the text and read Scripture formationally. You have to "center down," to use the old Quaker phrase-become still, relinquish your agenda and acknowledge the presence of God. You may have to relax first in order to do this. When you do this, you may find that no word ad­dresses you out of that text on that day, but the constant discipline of preparing yourself and entering into formational reading will itself be spiritually forming to your soul.

Allow the two kinds of reading—informational and formational—to work together. You may begin reading a Scripture passage with informational dynamics, but then you must be sensitive to the need to move to the formational dynamics of reading. Allow yourself to become open and receptive to the intrusion of the living Word of God into your garbled, distorted self. You may get tripped up on an informational point and need to move back to an informational mode. There is a necessary interplay between these two approaches, but you'll ultimately need to arrive at a disciplined development of the formational mode of approaching the text. As we become skilled at shifting to that inner posture of becoming listeners, we develop "ears to hear." We become recep­tive and accessible to being addressed by the living Word of God.

HOSPITAL VISITATIONS

We are in need of extra help to call on our members that are in the hospital just one day a month to stop and visit with them for a few minutes. If you can help, please call Rita Hayes at 641-842-4111.

FUMC AT HELPING HANDS
April is FUMC’s month to help with grocery assistance at Helping Hands Food Pantry. On April 9 and April 23 volunteers are needed from 10:15-11:00 to unload the truck and 11:00-3:00 to sack and handout groceries.

BLANKET SUNDAY

Come join us Cinnamon Roll Sunday, March 11th at 9:30 a.m. in WFH to hear the Blanket Sunday presentation. Collection for Blanket Sunday will take place on March 17th and 18th during regular services.

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING - MARCH 18

One Great Hour of Sharing is one of the six church-wide Special Sundays with offerings of The United Methodist Church. One Great Hour of Sharing enables the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to live out its mission to alleviate human suffering. UMCOR responds to natural or human made disasters - those interruptions of such magnitude that they overwhelm a community's ability to recover on its own. Please consider donating.

UMW EXECUTIVE MEETING

The UMW executive meeting that was scheduled for March 1st has been rescheduled to March 8 at 1:00 p.m. in EFH.

CAR POOL TO MEDORA

The United Methodist Women will be car pooling to attend the South Central District Time Apart at the Medora UM Church Saturday, March 31. We should leave the church by 8:15 a.m. If you are interested in attending please let Pat Haning know at 842-2790.

GOOD FRIDAY DAY CAMP

Good Friday Day Camp will be held on Friday, April 6. Kids age 3 through 5th grade are welcome to attend. Watch for more details!!
Good Friday Day Camp Workers Needed: If you would like to help invest in the future of the church by helping 3 through 11 year olds learn about God and the true meaning of Easter, join us for a planning meeting on Tuesday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the library.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT

Come join Montgomery Street Preschool for their annual Family Fun Night on Friday, March 2. The evening will begin with a light meal from 6 to 6:45 pm in West Fellowship Hall. The MSPS students will have artwork on display and there will be activities for the kids. At 7:00 p.m. the entertainment will begin in the sanctuary as Jim Austin will be performing a comedy magic show. Invite your friends, families, and neighbors for this fun family event!

PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION

The annual MSPS Registration Open House will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21. Invite anyone with preschool aged children to stop by and check out MSPS. Enrollment is now open for the 2012/2013 school year. Call the preschool at 842-2193 for more information.

YOUTH GROUP NEWS
Youth Group Dates for March Sunday, March 11 and Sunday, March 25 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the church.

Youth Fundraiser - Dinner and a Movie! Come to dinner and stay and enjoy a movie on Saturday, March 31. The youth will be accepting free will donations for the dinner and movie. All proceeds will be going toward their mission trip to Chicago this summer. Watch for more details!

To arrange, please contact the florist of your choice. Payment and delivery arrangements are to be made directly with the florist. It is important to note and remind the florist that all altar flowers must be delivered to the church by Friday at Noon. In addition, you must contact Heather at the church office at 641-842-3712 or fumchurch@iowatelecom.net to notify her of the day the altar flowers will be used as well as if you would like a dedication to be included in the weekly announcements. Make sure that you let her know the special occasion, a brief message that you would like printed, and/or who they were given by.

HEIFER PROJECT COLLECTION

Heifer’s mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth.   By giving families a hand-up, not just a hand-out, we empower them to turn lives of hunger and poverty into self reliance and hope.   A special collection is taken the fourth weekend of every month.

LENTEN DEVOTIONAL BOOKS

There are Lenten devotional books from the Society of St. Andrew available in the church office or on the church office window ledge. 

LAY LENTEN DEVOTIONALS

Beginning Wednesday, February 29, there will be a light meal served in WFH from 5:45-6:30 p.m. followed by a 30 minute devotional presented by FUMC lay speakers from the lectionary series “Call Him Savior”.   These Lenten devotionals will continue subsequently each Wednesday of Lent through March 28. 

NOON ECUMENICAL LENTEN SERVICES

Also, beginning Wednesday, February 29, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of FUMC, pastors from local churches will give a 30 minute Lenten Devotion followed by a light lunch served in WFH.  The ecumenical services will continue through March 28.

FAMILY FUN NIGHT

On Friday, March 2 MSPS will be having their annual family fun night.  The event this year will again be open to the church and community family.  The evening will begin with a light meal from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. in WFH.  The MSPS students will have artwork on display and there will be some activities for kids to participate in.  At 7:00 p.m. we will move the evening upstairs to the sanctuary where Jim Austin will perform a fun filled, interactive show for children of all ages.  We hope everyone will be able to join us for this fun evening!
